Thousands of nurses and midwives have applied to join the NMC temporary register to help tackle the coronavirus outbreak.

The NMC has said that 5,633 people had signed up to the register as of Sunday. It is open to former nurses and midwives who have left in the last three years.
The NMC temporary register will go live within 24 hours of emergency coronavirus legislation being passed by parliament, which is expected to take place today.
The NMC wrote on Twitter: ‘Thank you, we are incredible grateful to you.’

As of Sunday, there are 5,683 coronavirus cases in the UK and 281 people have died.
In addition, the nursing regulator has said student nurses and midwives will be invited to complete the last six months of their programme as a paid clinical placement, and a temporary part of the register for students could be launched in future.

Revalidation deadlines will also be extended by three months and the NMC is seeking further flexibility around CPD.
