NMC to survey over 800,000 professionals on register

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is surveying over 841,000 nursing and midwifery professionals on its register to better understand their experiences of delivering care.

The survey will run annually and cover topics including professionals’ experiences at work over the past year, barriers professionals identify to good standards of care and views on next career steps.

Respondents will also be asked how well they think the NMC is performing as a regulator.

Emma Westcott, NMC acting executive director of strategy and insight, said the regulator was ‘uniquely placed’ to learn from professionals across the UK.

‘Our survey will provide invaluable insight, and we strongly encourage everyone on our register to make their voices heard,’ she added.

‘This will help us to strengthen the evidence base for how we regulate and inform our work with others who shape the context for health and care delivery.’

The findings will be used to shape the NMC’s regulatory work and will be shared with relevant stakeholders across the various settings where nurses and nursing associates work, the regulator noted.

The survey will be sent to registered nurses, nursing associates and midwives between 25 March and 2 April 2025 before closing on 17 April 2025.

Earlier this month, the regulator outlined its three-year programme to build a ‘positive, empowering and inclusive culture’ for its staff and registrants.

The plan comes after an independent culture review published last July revealed serious concerns about the regulator, including a ‘toxic culture’ of bullying, harassment and racism.
